Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay

By Tatiana de Rosnay

A few months ago, a friend of mine recommended "Sarah's Key" to me. I remember her saying at the time that she never knew about this event in France concerning Jews. I certainly knew that there were Jews transported out of France to the concentration camps. However, the event called Velodrome d'Hiver or Vel d'Hiv as it was known took place in Paris on July 16, 1942. This is not known or taught by most historians here and the French are ashamed of what happened and choose not to discuss or make much of it. This is a book of historical fiction surrounding this event which did occur. Two stories are meshed together-one Jewish girl who lived through the horror and the woman in modern times investigating it. It will touch your heart and soul that you will not forget. Give this book a read and I promise you that you will not be able to put it down.

My Favourite Book of all time!

A timeless classic that anyone can enjoy!
Sunday, November 27, 2011

Today's post will feature my favourite book of all time. It is "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. I was first exposed to this book in high school in the 1970's and it is still part of the curriculum now. When we used to read aloud a chapter a class, I always read ahead as it was so interesting to me. When I first watched the movie with Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch, it was like he was born for the part. I have always looked up to the morals of Atticus and his family as they seemed to be ahead of their time in regards to their attitudes about people in general. I sincerely hope they never take it out of schools as I feel it is necessary for children and adults to be exposed to these kind of stories and how they relate to life.

Quote for the day:

"I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.  It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.  You rarely win, but sometimes you do."

~Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird, Chapter 11, spoken by the character Atticus
